Chamberlain WiFi Setup

Smart Garage Door Opener using smart phone as a remote

Built in Wifi is an increasingly popular feature on garage door openers. It is a super convenient feature because you can not only monitor your garage door from anywhere in the world but you can open or close it as well. This could be great for letting in a repairman without leaving a key or giving out the code to your keypad, letting the kids in from school ( they love to lose keys and can forget the code one day and remember it the next.) Or maybe you closed it before work, maybe not? Just look in the app and you can see.

The most popular is made by the Chamberlain group, who makes LiftMaster, Chamberlain and craftsman openers. If your opener does not have built-in WiFi you may be trying to set up a MyQ bridge you bought at home depot or lowes. Either way this chamberlain WiFi setup guide will work for you.

First things first you need to have a few things in order first before beginning.

  1. Download the MyQ app from the apple app store or the google play store
  2.  Create an account on the app
  3. Know your WiFi network name and password
  4. Ensure you have a strong WiFI signal

Quick note on WiFi networks: some internet service providers provide their customers with dual broadband routers that display a 5 ghz network and a 2.4 ghz network. This is common with Comcast or Xfinity. Make sure you are connected to your 2.4 ghz network. If you are unsure which one is broadcasting you may want to contact your internet service provider.

Alright let’s get started.

Step 1:

Log into the app:

Your user name will be your email address and the pw is the one you created setting up your account. Keep in mind that every device that wants to connect to the MyQ app must use this same account or you will continue to kick each other off.

Step 2:

Add a Device:

Tap on the + sign in the upper right hand corner to add a device. Most will be using a ceiling mounted garage door opener as the type of device.

Step 3:

Select your type of wall button and follow the instructions to activate the learn button.

Smart Control Panel

Tap: Menu >

Use the down arrow to scroll to program and select it using the side arrow >

Alternatively you may choose WiFi setup

Multi Control Panel

Lift the button cover and press the learn button

Single button

Press and hold the button on the side for 6 seconds

Once you have successfully activated the control panel you should hear a beep from your garage door opener.

Step 4:

Follow the on screen instructions within the app.  Here are the steps you should follow according to Chamberlain:

  1. In the app, tap Next.
  2. Tap Yes when you hear a beep.
  3. Leave the myQ app and go to your phone’s Wi-Fi settings.
  4. Tap the network that begins with myQ-XXX.
  5. Return to the myQ app and tap Next.
  6. Select your home Wi-Fi network from the list.
  7. Enter your network password and tap Next. Your garage door opener is now connecting.
  8. Name your garage door opener and tap Next.
  9. Tap Finish to see your new device listed in the app.
  10. Tap the garage door to activate the opener.

Two things we have learned, one if you are using an iPhone, make sure you make deliberate pauses before tapping the next step or it may not work. Two, if the set-up is not quick and easy and you are sure you have a strong WiFi connection the most common reason is because you are not connecting to a 2.4 ghz network, the quickest resolution is to contact your internet service provider.

Lastly if you find you are losing connection regularly it is most likely due to a security protocol with your internet service provider and again the fastest resolution is to contact them.
