Should I add windows in a garage door?

When it comes to windows in a garage door there are a few common questions most customers have. Windows are a must for some, take it or leave it for others and still others and absolute hard no. Windows can have some benefits that should be considered. One, they do let in a lot of natural light, which can be nice if you work on home projects in your garage. Two, they do have a nice appeal from a design standpoint that can really tie in to the rest of the house giving you a major boost when it comes to curb appeal.

Here are some frequently asked questions when it comes to garage door windows.

One question people have is can they add windows to an existing garage door. It honestly depends on the age of the door and the manufacturer. As long as you have a door made by a manufacturer that is still producing and selling in your area and they have not changed the panel design since your door was originally installed then yes you can. The way we add windows to a garage door is by removing either the top section or the one immediately below it and replace it with a section that has windows.

What are some of the pros and cons of having windows in a garage door

Pros:

  • Natural light
  • Curb appeal

Cons:

  • Allows people to see in your garage
  • Can also be broke and allow access to the emergency release handle of your garage door opener

Another big question is how much does it cost to add windows?

This can vary depending on a few factors. One, how big of a door? Obviously the smaller the door the less the cost.

The glass type in the windows will affect the price as well. Most garage doors you see just have clear glass in them. That is what is in stock and most affordable so that is what 99% of people get.

Other glass options include, tinted, frosted, glue chip and glass with decorative inlays. You can even get insulated glass for your garage door which is great in colder climates where people would still like to take advantage of having windows in their garage door.
